On Thursday, May 19, 2022, at around 2:08 a.m., a deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of East US Highway 290 and Wehmeyer Lane after observing a defective equipment violation and learning the vehicle registration was expired.
The deputy made contact with the female driver and male passenger, and after doing so, the deputy learned the male passenger had an outstanding warrant from the Arizona Department of Corrections. The male subject, 40 years old and of Tucson, AZ was arrested on the warrant.
The deputy had previously developed reasonable suspicion to ask the female driver for consent to search the vehicle and she agreed.
While conducting a search of the vehicle, deputies located drug paraphernalia and approximately 22.83 grams of a substance identified as methamphetamine. They also located a glass methamphetamine smoking bong which contained a liquid substance that field-tested positive as methamphetamine. The substance weighed approximately 61.76 grams.
The female driver, 40 years old and also of Tucson, AZ, was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance in Penalty Group 1/1-B >= 4 grams < 200 grams.
The male passenger was also charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance in Penalty Group 1/1-B >= 4 grams < 200 grams.
Both were transported to the Gillespie County Jail.
